KINDRED

Have you ever been hurt by someone you loved, and forgave them? In the book Kindred by Octavis Butler this 26 year old Afican-American women goes back in time to save her ancestors Rufus from dying in the 1800's. This book takes place  in Maryland. In that time when slavery was taken place and Dana had to adapt to that time. While in her present time she is a free and in California pursuing her carrer as an authour. In my opion Octavia Butler's message is that even in the face of oppression humans have the capicity ti forgive thier oppressors.
In the book Kindred, Dana(the main character)consistently forgice people. When Dana attempts tp run away from the plantation to find her husband, but Dana was caught by Tom Weylin.Tom Weylin(Rufus' father) kicked Dan in the head.A couple of years later Tom Weyin was sick and had a heart attack. Dana attempted to save him by giving him mouth-to-mouth. This explains that Dana understands the relationship between Rufus and Tom therefore between all the oppression and controversy they had.
Another example of Dana forgiving others in the book is when Margaret(Rufus' mother approached Dana while  she cleaning, Margeret slaps her across the face and says,"You filthy black whore. This is a christians house." Later on when Margaret grew old she is sweet and kind and in need of assistance. Dana adapts and have to move on. Dana forgave her for physically oppressing her. Margaret was allways jealous of Dana for having a personal relationship with Rufus. At that time it was usual for whites to abuse blacks. But for Dana and her recent time the early 1970's she don't tolerate that. She had to adapt to the old time.
One different situation, when Dana forgives people in her flashbacks is when, Rufus put Dana in the feild to pick cotton. Rufus believed that Dana was the one to blame for his father's lost. So he punished Dana. Social Justice wise she has no rights and can't revolt against the whites and overseers. Rufus hired an overseer to train and whip Dana into shape to be a feildhand. She was abused physically and mentally. Every little thing Dana did  wrong she was lashed with the whip. It was econical exploitation. Dana feels that Dana is being used and as a nurse and a puching bag. But Rufus feels that she is a smart slave ready to run away.
Now you see that Octavia Butler tried to stress the message of forgiveness. The capacitity Dana has and how flexible she is with Rufus and hid family.  But the person that has a problem with forgiveness is Alice(Rufus' babymother)is so fed up with Rufus' aggressive, jealous, oppressive and biased self. She felt all her buttons were pushed. Her children were put into slavery, she was raped many times, and got her husband sold to the south. Alice shoud havestuck it out or killed Rufus. The main point was that Octavia wanted to distinguish how the time changes the perseverence and hope. Alice and Dana are from the same family but Dana has more hope .

FREEDOM IS LIBERATION

Freedom is Liberation
Freedom is the way of life
Freedom is a necessity
Oppression and Barriers are the Oppressors use
of restriction

Freedom is curiosity
Freedom brings joy and memories
Restrictions and Barriers are built
to be liberated

Freedom is an opportunity
to discover something special and new
a baby bird has to leave the nest
to be unleashed to the new world
to be independent and provide for itself and learn mistakes
one day the open door will close
the bird will fly
the sky will be reached
the freedom will come

EXPO TOPIC ESSAY

My group called FEAR OF POLICE. In the book The Outsiders we have been taking notes and noticing fear and oppression from police. Also we looked back on our own experiences and lives and use those as well as another option to use.
Some oppressors that are in this topic is the police AKA fuzz, 5-0 and others you can think of. People fear the police because they have authority and the right to arrest you and put you in jail or prison. They also have special weapons that can fatally kill you. Some people are afraid because of the things police do out of fear for example Oscar Grant. A young African American male that was on his way home on New Years that was shot and killed for no particular reason. That’s just an example of numerous incidents that happened when an innocent person was shot.
So after Oscar Grant was killed by Johannes Mehserle he was sent to trial. Now any man that killed a man and had that much evidences the man will be sentence 25 years to life at least. But since the man was a cop and the jury was mostly white and he was let off with 2 years. The system the judicial branch helps the cops out and that is why people fear the police. They are afraid of being judged by their sexual status, class or skin color.
People that are afraid of the police and did something wrong try to run away, head to a different state. They are also very anxious they will get caught. They are really scared of going to jail and being in there for a long time. So they run away from their problem.
Some connections or an experience I have with the police is when I seen my neighbor that sold some weed to an undercover cop and was arrested. He was tazered 2 times and thrown to the ground 2 times also. He was sent to prison for a year. That was horrible to see.
